single/dual port motors for VW bug?
i am thinking of getting a vw bug, can someone tell me the difference between a single port and a dual port motor for a vw
Lots of history w/that question. Up until the late 60s, it was the single port 30-40 hp. 1200-1500 cc. engines which went into all the bugs. Then; I believe it was arround 1970 when VW introduced the 1600 `performance' motor. (45-55 hp.) These feature the `dual port' heads' On the single P. eng. it was one port trying to feed two cylinders equaly, through a garden hose sized intake manifold. The dual port design gives a straight path for the airfuel mix into the cylinders.
Also; On the dual port heads, a little port work and carb re-jetting can give you significant (+ -50%) hp increase.Cant be done on a single port.
Hope this helps. A dual port; 1600Cc is what you want. Also; A real cool `mariage' is to find a 67 bug, (the last year for the old style bumpers wthe curved pipes) which is lighter than a 1600Cc equiped bug, and it looks better than the newer straight bumper.
